Personally, when I think about escape, I think about losing myself in a good book or entering the world of cinema by seeing a great (or not so great) movie. Ideally if I could get away to a nice beach or an exotic foreign location, that would be better.
For this week’s challenge, I thought instead to preview just one of several pictures that I’ll be posting soon of my recent trip to Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia.
This is Al Capone’s prison cell. He was imprisoned here back in 1929. I never knew that within this cell, he was afforded such luxurious accommodations. Despite his incarceration; the bleak four walls, the isolation, the bars, the constant guards and the lack of privacy, Al Capone was able to escape his dreary 8 month stint by losing himself in his very cell.
He had access to a radio to listen to his sports, news and music. He had books to read. He had opportunities to write. I can imagine that the very nature of this unique cell allowed Al Capone the opportunity to escape every day.
If I was ever subjected to such imprisonment, this is how I would like to have my cell furnished (an extra bookshelf or two is the only thing missing here).
